Kia Corthron Afterglow

Kia Corthron
Have you ever watched “How to Get Away with Murder” and wondered how Shonda Rhimes comes up with some of things she writes? Well I have done so, and I actually had the chance to peek into the mind of writer: Kia Corthron. She hosted a master creative writing class on campus this semester.
And a master she was!  She has written everything from books, plays, and she even wrote for The Wire, an HBO series. I had the pleasure of sitting in the class (you may have read some of the tweets and posts about the event).
During her time with the class she spoke on how she began writing, her writing process, and even took the time to squash some Hollywood rumors.  She brought her words to life when she read from her book TheCastle Cross the Magnet Carter: A Novel.  You can check out a video of her reading on the LLP Facebook page. Her ability to depict a 1950s era injustice sent chills into the room – no spoilers, buy the book.
In any case, her discussion helped to broaden my view on writing and where it can take me.  English majors can be proud of the many opportunities available to them.
