Hello and welcome back to the Language Literature and Philosophy blog. Our goal is to keep students informed about LLP events. Last week, we had a couple of events involving our department. The first was a mock interview session hosted by the Career Development Center.  As an English major, I am always looking for other ways to market myself with my degree other than just teaching or writing. Having the opportunity to meet with companies like Lockheed Martin and Regions was amazing. Also, the Film Club is hosted a viewing of “12 Years A Slave” in light of Black History Month. I know a few of my professors were giving extra credit for those who went and watched the movie, so I hope some of you took advantage of that.

            There is more to come this week. On Thursday we have a playwright master class with Kia Corthron. This event will not be public, so be on the look out for pictures and videos on our Facebook  and Twitter page. The film club is hosting a viewing of “V for Vendetta” Friday at 11am in Humanities; I definitely look forward to chatting with Dr. Wise about her movie choices for this month. Our last event of the week is a Pupil to Professional workshop on Interviewing and Career Fair strategies.  That workshop will be held Feb. 19^th at 2:30 p.m. in Humanities 113. We hope to see you at our events this week and for those of you who came last week, we hope to see you again!

Metaphors and Magic: The first Soul Fire Meeting of the Semester

      As children we learn that poems are never ending rhymes that catches our attention, but as we get older our expectations of poems change. We learn that poetry can be your favorite rap song or your own original work. Poems dare you to not only look but also read and comprehend the vague allusions. Poems also help the mind reroute patterns by making us see the familiar new. Some use poetry to ease their mind of relationship stress, peer pressure, socio-economic issues and other things.

      Here at TSU we have a poetry club called Soul Fire, which is composed of both male and female students who enjoy expressing their everyday lives through writing poems. Soul Fire is a very welcoming group to those who want to regularly participate and those that just want to stop by for a listen. On Wednesday’s at 5’oclock the group meets to discuss upcoming performances, events, and even share their work.  But be careful, because if your poem is awesome the group members will throw things at your feet! Soul Fire’s first performance of the semester is February 3, 2016 at TSU’s Soul Lounge.  Be sure to come out to hear some great poetry and if you want share some of your own.  We look forward to seeing new people and hearing your awesome work!

Hello! 

 My name is Alexis Brooks, and I am the new LLP Social Media Intern. Coolest job ever! Allow me this opportunity to formally introduce myself. I am an English major with a minor in Spanish. I am a junior at Tennessee State University.  I chose to be an English major because, I loved volunteering at a local middle school as tutor and I made a close relationship with many students during my short time there. I could see what impact I made on their lives and it made me feel good.  I decided then to changed my major to English, so that I could continue to help and motivate kids to do better. I want to be able to help more struggling students succeed and help the passing students continue to do well. 

This semester I am interning for the English department and I am taking over the social media scene. I will be interviewing different professors about the events they have going on in their classes, as well as blogging about Soul Fire our poetry club. We want more people to come out to our different events and what better way to spread the word than social media. Be on the lookout for our new Facebook page, Twitter, and follow us on Pinterest.
