Pupil to Professional, Voter Registration and Other Events

Hello fellow Tigers!
I’m here again with the latest news within the LLP department and a few on campus events,
so let’s just dive right in. Wednesdays are days where organizations and local employers set up
information tables in the Student Center to ignite student interest.  Easy enough, right? Wrong! Last week on Instagram and in various campus GroupMe messages, The “Live 75”(SGA) announced that they would have information table set up for people to register to vote and get a FREE TSU black history t-shirt. So of course the word got out and the turn out for registration was unbelievable. Well, of course when the members of SGA brought the shirts out it was complete CHAOS. I barely got a shirt and almost lost my phone in the process! So even through the chaos, and the long wait, I received a shirt and I registered to vote!
In other news, there will be another Pupil to Professional event Friday, April 1st at 2:30pm. There will be some Human Resource Representatives coming out to help us prepare for careers! Plan to come out because we want everyone to be as prepared as possible when it comes time for interviews and internships! Also, next week the awesome poetry group Soul Fire and the LLP film club are hosting: A Movie and A Metaphor. They will be showing Slam and there will also be Open Mic Poetry. So come out April 8th at 11am in Humanities 113 to be a part of this event! Don’t forget April 22nd-April 23rd is the I Want to Write Festival, so come out and support your peers and learn a little more about poetry.
Since the semester is coming to end you all know that SEC week is coming up shortly so be on the look for that and also for the graduating seniors prepare for senior next week April 4th- April 8th. Always check our Facebook and Twitter throughout the week for other updates and information!

Welcome Back!

 Welcome back fellow Tigers!
It is the dreadful week after spring break, and we all are struggling to get back in the groove of things. I hope that you all enjoyed your spring break and turned up as much as possible because it is now CRUNCH TIME. Yes, the first half of spring was quite gloomy and slowed paced because of the cold weather and the few snow days; but now we have a little over a month to pull things together. This semester administration took our advice and had midterms before the break, what a relief! Spring Break is a week to let go and let god, I mean who wants to spend their last day of spring break looking over material? The thought of midterms after spring break is quite dreadful, so shout out to administration!
The foreign language department is hosting the International Food Festival on Wednesday April 13th in Elliot Hall. I know a few professors are offering extra credit points for participating in the event or dropping by and enjoying the international delicacies. But, if your professor is not offering extra credit, you should still come by and get some free food! Another event coming up in the LLP department is the “I Want to Write Conference” which will be April 22nd- April 23rd, which is a big workshop including open mic with Soul Fire, visual documentaries, and learning about different types of poetry. Please be on the lookout for more information about the #iW2WC and plan to come out and be a part of this wonderful event and support your peers!
There are a host of other events on the horizon within our department, including film screenings and trivia games.  Also, campus wide so please check our Facebook and Twitter page for more information on the events! Remember to finish the semester strong and take advantage of the things our university has to offer use these workshops and conferences on campus to your advantage!
I hope that everyone continues to have a great semester!
Truly,

Kia Corthron Afterglow

Kia Corthron
Have you ever watched “How to Get Away with Murder” and wondered how Shonda Rhimes comes up with some of things she writes? Well I have done so, and I actually had the chance to peek into the mind of writer: Kia Corthron. She hosted a master creative writing class on campus this semester.
And a master she was!  She has written everything from books, plays, and she even wrote for The Wire, an HBO series. I had the pleasure of sitting in the class (you may have read some of the tweets and posts about the event).
During her time with the class she spoke on how she began writing, her writing process, and even took the time to squash some Hollywood rumors.  She brought her words to life when she read from her book TheCastle Cross the Magnet Carter: A Novel.  You can check out a video of her reading on the LLP Facebook page. Her ability to depict a 1950s era injustice sent chills into the room – no spoilers, buy the book.
In any case, her discussion helped to broaden my view on writing and where it can take me.  English majors can be proud of the many opportunities available to them.
